Bookworms Book Club

We are a friendly group of readers who meet on the first Thursday of each month at 1:30 p.m.  We offer readers the opportunity to participate in spirited discussions which makes for a much more personal and intimate reading experience! Each member plays a role in selecting which books they would like to read and discuss. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 1st in the Program Rooms where we'll be discussing The Postmistress by Sarah Blake.  Please email us for more information or to register.

Pins, Potlucks and Paid Holidays: Creating the Nazi Community with Dr. Valerie Hebert

Drawing on images and artifacts from the era, this talk will discuss the subtle ways in which the Nazis created and perpetuated the illusion of unified social support for the Third Reich. Please RSVP to attend. Valerie Hebert received her PhD from the University of Toronto and held a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada post-doctoral fellowship at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.  She teaches modern European History, specializing in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.

Grab a cold one with Books on Tap; a book club for those in their 20s & 30s.  This month we meet at the Hog n' Penny to discuss Shirley Jackon's "The Haunting of Hill House".  Drop in to the Library to register and get a copy of the book.  Please email us for more information.

Looking for cooking inspiration? Enjoy cooking and chatting food? Welcome to the What's 4 Dinner? book club, the OPL's newest and most delicious club! We meet every other month on the third Tuesday beginning October 20th. Join us upstairs by the fire at 6:30 p.m. for an informal hour of food and fun. Love, Sex and Mate Choice: A Psychoanalytic Perspective with Dr. Les Fleischer

What are the differences between sex, romantic love and attachment?  Why is it sometimes difficult to integrate all three?  Why do people often repeat dysfunctional patterns in love, despite saying "I will do better next time"?  Dr. Fleishcer will touch on how an understanding of the unconcious and neuro-biological factors can help us understand these commplex phenomena. Les Fleishcher teaches in the Department of Social Work at Lakehead University Orillia.  He is also a psychoanalyst and is on the faculty of the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis.
