NETWORK 2000 The digitization of the William Sword Frost Scrapbooks was funded through the Network 2000 programme. Network 2000 is a public library community strategy to connect all Ontario public libraries to the Internet by the year 2000 using a broad bandwidth, province-wide network. This network, called OPNet , will enable libraries to access Internet information resources and disseminate information. The OPNet community will include health, education and social development sectors, as well as libraries. Emphasizing community partnerships, the Digital Content Creation fund allowed the Orillia Public Library to convert the contents of the William Sword Frost Scrapbook to computer format, along with 2000 photos of Orillia history which were held in the librarys photo collection. The scrapbook is an important record of the life in Orillia and Ontario in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In addition, one volume documents the contribution of Orillians in World War I. Originally donated to the library, the scrapbooks were transferred to the Simcoe County Archives for proper conservation and storage: therefore, their co-operation and assistance was required before the project could be undertaken. The funding allowed for the purchase of a computer, scanner, back-up equipment, digital camera and the necessary software to complete the project, as well as the salary for a graphic designer to complete the project. The Orillia Public Library hopes that researchers, students and the general public who are interested in the history of Orillia and / or the Frost family will find the project useful. Please contact the library or the Simcoe County Archives for further information or comments. CREDITS The Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation through the Cultural Partnership Branch funded the digitization project. The project was a partnership between Orillia Public Library and the Simcoe County Archives.
