As is indicated on Page 182 the conference at Ragged Rapids, July 25th,1913, was really a turning point in Orillias history. The Ragged Rapids dam was successful but did not fully develop the power of the River. The Trent Vally [should be Valley] Canal was fast growing into being and to effectuate this it was necessary to erect a new dam further down the River which was done at the expense of the Federal Government: The deal was made at the power site that day. The negotiator for Orillia was J. B. Tudhope. The representative of the Government was the Hon. Frank Cochrane, Minister of Railways and Canals. This ended Orillia's power problems until the insatiable demand for power made it necessary to join the power system in the middle 50s. |
