Welcome to Orillia!

Library staff can connect you with service providers who will help your family settle and feel at home in your community. We can recommend programs, services and resources useful to newcomers and we offer library materials in multiple languages. Staff are happy to take you on a tour of the library and to register you for a free library membership card. During your next visit to the library, ask us about the following free services and programs we offer to newcomers.

English Language Learning Programs and Services

ESL Conversation Circle

Join our weekly English Conversation Circle to practice speaking English, connect with your community and share your settlement experience in a fun and informal setting. This is a free program run by the Welcome Centre Immigrant Services Mobile Unit every Wednesday from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Library's Program Room.

Visit www.welcomecentre.ca to learn more about all of the services offered by the Welcome Centre, or call them at 1-877-761-1155.

Mango Languages
Mango is an online language learning database that teaches practical conversation and cultural awareness for the world's most popular languages. This database is free and easy to use, all you need is internet access and your Library card.

Visit our Mango Languages page to get started. Create an account to track your progress and learn at your own pace.

Multilingual Materials
The Orillia Public Library is pleased to offer a small collection of French materials.  We also have a small collection of Chinese, Spanish and Polish materials available.
Simcoe County Libraries Multicultural Book Club
The Multicultural Book Club features recent bestsellers and award winning titles that tell diverse stories. These books are either written or translated into English. Reserve book club sets online and pick up at the Orillia Public Library.

Visit the Simcoe County Libraries Multicultural Book Club webpage for a list of available titles and to make your reservation.

SPICE: Seniors Partnering with Immigrants in Conversation Exchanges

SPICE (Seniors Partnering with Immigrants in Conversation Exchanges) connects seniors looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity with immigrants who wish to practice their English language skills. One-on-one conversation exchanges provide newcomers with an opportunity for enhanced language learning in a friendly and informal environment. A conversation exchange can be as simple as sharing recipes or family stories, discussing politics, chatting about popular culture, or debating opinions over coffee. This is a fun and flexible program designed to foster friendship and understanding. Training and resources are provided for volunteers, and the commitment is flexible (suggested one hour per week).

Volunteers must be age 55 or older, be proficient in English (or French), be patient, appreciate diversity, complete Cultural Competency Training (provided) and obtain a criminal record check (existing Library volunteers who have already completed the check may not require a second record check). If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a volunteer with SPICE, please email us.

Citizenship Classes
Are you applying for Canadian Citizenship? Join the YMCA for their 8-week virtual Citizenship course to help prepare you for the application process, and learn about becoming a Canadian citizen.  Virtual Classes Starting Soon. Spaces are limited.  Contact Suzana Tanase for more information or to register:  suzana.tanase@sm.ymca.ca | (249) 288-4434
